three dee

never thought I'd see the day...
I just finished taking a week-long course on 3ds max in cambridge. so much to cover in so little time...thankfully, I was to able to spend a decent portion of class on this holy wyrmslayer. pretty happy with the results.
from concept sketch to finished render/animation.

draw-a-friend
this is a sketch of my good friend and immensely talented artist, chris o'neill...he's constantly going around drawing other people, so I thought it was high time to turn the tables.I left a lot of the dark areas white in the hopes of future digital color.
good thing I spent all that time memorizing the contours of his face during hangouts!!!

memorial tattoo/bone deth design: final linework
I finally got around to finishing this design properly.made some revisons, added some detail, and inked in illustrator. all in all, I think it came out pretty well. I'm sure I could revise and tweak it forever, but that's not good for anyone. the only other thing I'd possibly do is add a little bit of dimensionality/cell shading at shajn's request. not sure exactly what his plan is.

wolf moon

so, some recent work.the one on top was done in illustrator for my friend alex's company, dance party massacre...it was supposed to be an ode to the photorealistic wolf/bear/eagle montage shirts that originally gained popularity in biker/nature enthusiast/native american pow-wow circles, but have more recently enjoyed an ironic resurgence...I wanted to achieve the same effect, with a slightly different, simplified line quality and a consideration for the fact that it would be printed in only two or three colors...the image below it is the finished product with alex's final touches.
more posts/personal artwork coming soon.

weird kreatures: the chupacabra
kept him fairly humanoid. was going to go for a half-dog thing, but opted not. dwarfed out...been watching a lot of twin peaks.chupacabra - a purported creature resembling a gargoyle, said to exist in parts of mexico and on puerto rico. spanish for "goat-sucker" for it's attacks and draining the blood of it's victims.

revised memorial tattoo
so, this is a revised version of the memorial tattoo design I had posted a ways back...most of it remained the same with the exception of the giant hummingbird, which has more significance than the generic eagle/hawk previously featured...still not sure of the composition/how the composition will look on an arm. final linework soon. feedback welcome.

and now for something completely different

so, here's a flash illustration test I took for a local company a couple months ago...I got an offer, but had prior obligations at the time and unfortunately had to decline...they gave me a loose storyboard sketch and a fully realized example of an existing background illustration. using those two resources, I had to produce a finished piece that matched the style, mood, and color palette...needless to say, not my go-to style, but I guess versatility is key...storyboard sketch on top, my interpretation below it.

weird kreatures: first post: the wendigo
so, this is the first of what I hope to be a series of mythical beasts and night creatures...the idea is to create my own images as much as possible, without referencing pre-conceived notions/other artistic interpretations...so here's number one:wendigo - (in the folklore of the ojibwa and other indians) a cannibalistic giant, the transformation of a person who has eaten human flesh.

pizza breath
some more self-induced torture... have been trying to stay sharp by drawing complex facial expressions with semi-ambiguous emotions from reference...man, really difficult to capture subtle nuance rather than slap on the standard happy/sad/surprised eyebrows...not the most creative subject matter, I know, but solid exercise nonetheless. all comments welcome...
